Meet Samantha Muirhead, Alberta’s Esteemed Provincial Apiculturist

Hailing from the heart of Alberta, Samantha Muirhead is a true native with a profound passion for the natural world. Her academic journey led her to the University of Alberta, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Animal Biology in 2003.

Her work spanned a wide array of topics, from developing innovative Nosema control methods and Varroa mite treatments to enhancing supplementary feeding practices and honey quality standards. Beyond research, Samantha’s dedication to bee wellbeing saw her serve as an apiculture inspector, where she played a pivotal role in maintaining the health and safety of bee populations. She also managed her own bee colonies, bringing practical experience and personal passion to her professional endeavors. Her leadership and expertise culminated in her supervision of the Bee Health Assurance Team, leading the charge in safeguarding Alberta’s bees.

In 2019, Samantha stepped into her current role as the Provincial Apiculturist for Alberta, a position that underscores her commitment to bee health and her status as a leading authority in the field.
